Hatsune Miku (初音ミク?) is a singing synthesizer application with a female
persona, developed by Crypton Future Media. It uses Yamaha Corporation's
Vocaloid 2 synthesizing technology. The name of the character comes
from a fusion of the Japanese for first (初 hatsu?), sound (音 ne?) and
future (Miku (ミク?) sounds like a nanori reading of future, 未来, normally
read as "mirai"), referring to her position as the first of Crypton's
"Character Vocal Series". She was the second Vocaloid to be sold using
the Vocaloid 2 engine and the first Japanese Vocaloid to use the
Japanese version of the Vocaloid 2 engine. Her voice is sampled from
Japanese voice actress, Saki Fujita. Hatsune Miku has performed at her
concerts onstage as a projection.
First Appearance at Hatsune Mix! in Chapter 2. Aged 14, Kagamine Rin is the mirror image of Kagamine Len or his twin because the relationship between them are usually mirrored by their songs. She is ussually very blissful and hyper. Her personality is the opposite of Len and she is a sweet loving girl. She is also very strong. As a character from the second installment of Crypton's Vocaloid Character Voice Series, she is voiced by Asami Shimoda.

Len Kagamine (鏡音レン; Kagamine Len) is the second installment of the Vocaloid Character Vocal Series. The developer says that their family name was from the developing code combining Kagami (鏡, mirror) and Ne (音, sound), i.e., they are the mirror reflections meaning Rin “right” and Len “left.”, with the first syllables of their given names a pun on “Left” and “Right”. According to Vocaloid’s official blog, the package includes two voice banks: one for Rin and another for Len, both provided by the seiyū Asami Shimoda. Despite the double voice banks, the package still sells at the same price as Hatsune Miku. Their only cameo appearance in an anime is in (Zoku) Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei, where the two and Miku (and various other people and characters) try out to be the voice of Meru Otonashi.
On June 12, 2008, Crypton announced the updated edition, named “act2”, will be released in early July 2008. Users who had bought the old version will get an expansion disc free of charge. On June 18, 2008, beta demonstration songs using the new version were released on the company’s official blog.
KAITO is a Vocaloid DTM (Desktop Music) software created by Crypton Future Media. He utilizes the older Vocaloid engine, the predecessor for Vocaloid2. His voice is completely computer synthesized and is thus less smooth sounding. The voice was supplied by Fuuga Naoto. Although rougher sounding, KAITO and his counterpart MEIKO are able to incorporate much broader voice range than Miku and Rin/Len. He is fit to sing anything from hymns and children’s songs to R & B and pop, though the style that he is best used for is singing pop ballads.
As a mascot character, he is the older brother figure for the entire Vocaloid group, frequently called “nii-san”. KAITO is often the brunt of abuse from the ‘family’, often getting rolled over by the twins’ steam-roller. He wears a white coat and a blue muffler. His character item is ice cream, which he is very fond of; in particular, he loves the Häagen Dazs brand. He is generally characterized as being very loyal and dedicated to “Master”, and is also often used as a stand-in for the lover of the female (and sometimes male) characters when an older male character is necessary for a video, fanart, etc.
Meiko Sakine (咲音メイコ Sakine Meiko) is an officially recognized derivative of Meiko. Her name of Sakine 咲音, literally means "Blooming Sound" and has the same pronunciation as 先音, "Preceding Sound," i.e., she precedes Miku Hatsune. Her family name is sometimes shared among her other fanmade "siblings", such as Meito in particular.
She was conceived through the efforts of Producers working with Meiko's voice. This was owed largely to the fact that Meiko had become forgotten because of Hatsune Miku's popularity, leaving both her and Kaito behind. Meiko in particular did not have the young sounding voice of the released Vocaloid 2 voicebanks released at the time and therefore was not as appealing as they were to the Vocaloid Otaku based fandom. Meiko Sakine was established by Nanameue-P to push the limits of the Vocaloid software to make Meiko sound younger. Her official setting is "the Meiko who came into the music trend in the age of 16" (i.e., she is not a younger Meiko variation but Meiko when she was young) and Nanameue-P is "the producer who rediscovered Meiko in her youth". She was later made famous by the PV "Honey" featuring her and other derivatives such as Haku Yowane and Neru Akita, as well as the UTAU Teto Kasane alongside official Crypton Vocaloids.
